On This, Your Baptism

On This, Your Baptism is an installation and performance by Cindy Hernandez Mathis. Staged within a parish basement, the event investigates the popular material culture of baptismal party kitsch through a communal celebration of our personal feast day, the day of our Baptism.

Tickets are $15. Now available!

Engaging with popular memory of visual tropes such as chiffon cakes, lace and party favors, the event stages a conflict between twee, sentimental aesthetics that both uplift and obscure the transfigural, sacramental reality of Baptism. The installation is accompanied by a performance in the spirit of relational aesthetics in which participants are invited to receive a slice of cake. The cake slice is an invitation towards celebration and quiet contemplation of one’s own baptismal identity.

Behold the Beautiful One: The Heart of Beauty Artist Retreat

St. John Paul II once said that at the origin of all that exists, of all the created world, lies “not so much a great mind, as a great heart.” This Heart from which all of creation springs forth into being is the same source from which flows all that is Beautiful. This center of Beauty, this Heart of Beauty, is what anyone who has heard the summons to create, no matter what form that may take, has experienced — even if they couldn’t name it.

On May 9-11th, 2025 at the Loyola Jesuit Center in Morristown, NJ, we held our annual retreat for artists.

This year our speakers included: Fr. Malachy Napier, CFR, Fr. Isaac Spinharney, CFR, Sr. Tirzah Mariae, S.V., Br. Damiano Pio, CFR, Fr. Samuel Bellafiore, and Samantha D’Agostino.
